Mouille Point, Cape Town

Mouille Point is an exclusive suburb of Cape Town positioned between Green Point and the Atlantic Ocean and bounded by the V & A Waterfront, Granger Bay and Sea Point.  This suburb is a niche area which is predominantly high-end apartment blocks with spectacular views of the ocean or the green belts of the Green Point Urban Park and Metropolitan golf course. 

There is only 1,07% in freehold property in Mouille Point, and the remainder is sectional title.  Owners here are mostly in the 50 to 64 year old age bracket, with a large percentage being in the 65 or older age group. 

It is a small suburb with only two major roads running through it, and it has a much used promenade area with flat paved spaces on which to rollerblade, run, ride a bike or walk pets. 

The name Mouille Point comes from the French word for anchoring ground and it was in the early 18^th Century that the governor decided to build a breakwater to protect vessels at anchor in the bay.  This project was, however, never completed but in 1781 the French arrived and a battery was built near the unfinished mouille.  This was called Mouille Point Battery. 

This area is well known for its iconic red and white painted lighthouse (actually called the Green Point lighthouse), which is well maintained and repainted regularly.  The Mouille Point lighthouse, which was near Granger Bay, is no longer in existence. 

It is to many an ideal location as it is close enough to the buzz of city life and many restaurants, coffee shops and retail centres, but just set a little away so that one can escape to the view and quiet of the ocean.
