Tips for Relocating to a New Neighbourhood

Category Advice

Moving to a new neighbourhood can be both exciting and intimidating and it is not without its challenges and fears.

So, to help lessen the hassle and smooth the way, we have put together a few tips to guide you.

Things to consider when choosing a new neighbourhood

Before you make your final decision on where you would like to live, give some consideration to the following important factors.

Schools

If you have children make sure that the schools and daycare centres, if required, are up to your standards. Visit the local schools and centres and try and speak to some of the parents.

Safety

This will probably be top of mind when you are thinking of moving. So do your research well. Visit the area several times and at different times to get a feel for the neighbourhood. You can also chat to some of the residents.

Convenience

Check out whether the supermarkets and other places which you would frequent are closeby. Consider if your commute to work will be negatively impacted. Other services to look out for are medical facilities and possibly reliable public transport.

Things to expect from your new neighbourhood

New neighbourhoods feel...well, new! Surprise! The first few weeks can be a little awkward and frustrating. Here are a few new things you will encounter.

New neighbours

Not all neighbours are going to bound up to your door with a big smile and a welcome-to-the-neighbourhood cake. People may be a little suspicious of you so do your part by being friendly and approachable.

New routine

There will be different rubbish and, hopefully, recycling collection days. Your daily routine will probably change as travel and school pick up times may differ. Relax, you'll soon get into the swing of things.

New routes

Yes, you may find yourself getting lost. Just be patient and allow yourself extra time when running around. Of course, there's always Google Maps to fall back on!

It may take a while before you feel completely at home in your new neighborhood. Enjoy exploring your new area and meeting the residents. It's quite possible you will discover some hidden gems in both.
